Bovine Eye Dissection in Science Class

by Mrs. Naylor

Seventh grade students in Mrs. Naylor’s science class dissected cow eyes to learn about the structure and function of the eye.  Cow eyes are very similar to human eyes except they are much larger.  Students worked with a partner for the dissection.  They were especially amazed at the appearance of the blue tapetum located behind the retina.  The tapetum is very reflective. Cattle, deer, cats, dogs, and many other animals have eyes that have a reflective “shine” when headlights or flashlights shine on them.  The tapetum allows these animals to see better at night. Humans do not have a tapetum.
