Pawnee ISD Staff Attends National Math Institute

By Mr. Garcia

August 07, 2010

From July 11 to July 14, 2010, Pawnee ISD staff attended the Carnegie Learning National Math Institute at the historic Galt House Hotel in Louisville, Kentucky.  The 3-day research-based professional learning institute was made possible through a two-year pilot program grant awarded to Pawnee ISD from Carnegie Learning and the Texas Education Agency.

While at the Institute, the Pawnee ISD staff spent time learning effective mathematics instructional strategies and were provided with expertise in implementing a successful standards-based, student-centered classroom.  Workshops centered on mathematics content knowledge to support individual student learning and provided tools to monitor and sustain a successful Carnegie Learning implementation.  In addition, participants heard distinguished keynote addresses from speakers including Dr. Diane J. Briars, President of the National Council of the Supervisors of Mathematics, Dr. John McCook, President of John McCook and Associates, and Gene Wilhoit, Executive Director of the Council of Chief State School Officers.

As part of the two-year pilot program, Pawnee ISD is also receiving Carnegie Learning’s Cognitive Tutor Bridge to Algebra and 24/7 Math Tutor software programs, 20 Dell Notebook Laptops, and full on-site professional development from a certified Carnegie Learning Implementation Specialist.

“We are thrilled that we have been selected for this pilot program.  We strive to give our students the best education that we can possibly give them, and thanks to TEA and Carnegie Learning, our teachers and students will achieve even greater success in mathematics,” said Principal Demetrio Garcia.

Pawnee ISD staff in attendance included Stephen Gowens, Superintendent Elaine Richardson, Kathy Naylor, Gwen Hesseltine, Principal Demetrio Garcia, Vannessa Chandler, Arleen Vera, Linda Cruickshanks, and Bridgit Hernandez.
