Erupting Volcanoes in 3rd Grade

By Chandler, Vannessa

Do you know what causes a volcano to erupt?  Students in Ms. Vannessa Chandler’s 3rd grade class recently discovered the answer to this question as they studied a unit on volcanoes in their science class.  For a culminating activity, students were issued a project to complete that involved researching about and creating a homemade volcano that would need to “erupt” during their presentation to the class.  Lots of buzz and excitement filled our school on Wednesday, December 7, 2011, as homemade volcanoes began arriving.  During science class that day, each student presented their volcano to the class, school administrators, and other school staff.  Student presentations included the citation of where information was found to create the volcano and all of the materials used to create the volcano. At the end of each presentation, students caused the volcano they had created to “erupt.”  As one can imagine, oooo’s and aaahhh’s and rounds of applause filled the classroom each time.   Congratulations are extended to all 3rd grade students and to Ms. Chandler for the FANTABULOUS job each one of you did.  Keep up the great work—we are proud of you!!!
